NRNA- NCC formed in Italy and South Africa


The Non Resident Nepalis living in Italy and South Africa have formed the NRNA-NCC in their respective countries.

The NRNA-NCC of Italy was officially launched in a meeting of a large number of Nepalis organised in Milan on March 23rd. The participant of the meeting included delegates representing Nepalis residing in various regions of Italy as well as Nepali associations. Among the participants represented were: Nepali Association of Italy (NAI), Venice, Nepali Samaj, Pisa (NSP), Nepali Association of Rome in Italy, Rome (NARI), Nepal Miteri Munch, Milan (NMM), Nepali community of Bologna, Mantova, Varese, Brescia, Crema. The Nepal Miteri Munch, Milan was formally formed at the same time.

The NRN-NCC headed by Dr. Bhim Bahadur Bam and consists of the following 9 members:

The coordination committee has the responsibility of preparing a constitution of NRN-NCC, formalise and register of the NRN-NCC according to the Italian law and call first AGM within short time. It will work until the first AGM of the NRN-NCC Italy is formally held.

The meeting was chaired by senior Nepali citizen Mrs. Janaki Devi Rana. Greetings messages sent by President of NRNA Dr. Upendra Mahato and Vice President Ram Pratap Thapa were read at the meeting. Dr. Bhim Bahadur Bam, who took the initiative and coordinated the organisation of the meeting gave a brief introduction of NRNA and the NRN movement. Apart from the persons the ad hoc committee includes persons from various vocations and from various parts of Italy.

MILAN: Mr. Raju Rai, Mr. Krishna Neupane, Mr. Deepak Malla, Mrs. Seema Bam, Mrs. Devi Gurung, Mr. Rajan Kharel, Mr. Bhupendra Khanal, Mr. Kumar Rai, Mr. Sanjaya Shah (Alessandria), Mr. Ram Paudyal and Mr. Giri (Mantova), Mr. Nar Das Shrestha (Brescia), Mr. Raju Thapa (Varese).

ROME: Mr. Prakash Maharjan, Mr. Kersing Tamang, Mr. Devraj Gurung, Mr. Daulat Kumar Samba, Mr. Inderjeet Gurung.

VENICE: Mr. Ram Kumar Rai, Mrs. Dolly Acharya, Mr. Nagendra Man Khatri, Mr. Sher bahadur Tumbapo, Mr. Suman Rimal, Mr. Man Bahadur Tamang, Mr. Bishnu Prasad Pandey, Mr. Durga Prasad Kafle, Mr. Manj Adhikari, Mr. Bikram Payangu, Mrs. Maya Lama.

PISA: Mr. Buddha Raj Raut, Mr. Raju Raut, Mr. Sujan Budhathoki, Mr. Dhan Bahadur Polumi, Mr. Badri Narayan Choudry, Mr. Sameer Thapa.

BOLOGNA: Eng. Deo Kumar Gazmer, Mr. Dandi Sherpa, Mr. Richard Bhandari, Mr. Sambhu Ghimiray (Montese).

There are about 500 Nepalese living in Italy. Their number is increrasing. There has been increase in the number of Nepalese arriving in Italy with different motives and objectives during the last 5 years. Many Nepalis are coming to Italy from other European countries. Most of Nepalis are working in private sector factories and restaurants but some Nepalese have started their own business like small shops or Nepali restaurants. There are a few involved in academic works like research and teaching.


In another function held on the same day but across the continent, the NRNs in South Africa decided to form the NRN NCC of South Africa. About 70 Non-Rresident Nepalis from different parts of South Africa had gathered in East London for this purpose. The meeting was chaired by Dr. KM Gaire, senior most Nepali Medical Doctor, who came first to South Africa 28 years ago. Mr. Bhim Udas, General-Secretary, International Coordination Council (ICC) explained the importance and objectives of the NRN movement worldwide. NRNA is a common organization of about 2.0 million Nepalis living in 55 countries of the world. Mr. Auwtar Gurung and Mrs. Ranjana Udas, ICC members from South Africa and Lesotho, were also present at the meeting, which was facilitated by Dr. Mahendra Rayamajhi.

It was decided to form a seven member ad-hoc Committee of the NCC in the coordinatorship of Dr. Sudhakar Dabadi. The ad-hoc Committee comprises of the following:

While forming the Committee-consideration was given to both geographical and professional representations.

The main terms of reference of this Committee will be to hold the General Meeting of the NRNs within six months, in order to facilitate the establishment of a formal NCC in South Africa

Currently there are about 150 Nepalis living in different cities of South Africa. Of them, 27 families belong to the medical profession. It is expected that the flow of Nepalis in South Africa will continue after the opening of the Embassy of Nepal in Pretoria in the near future.
